Sport, Exercise & Health Psychology

Mission Statements


  • To investigate, through scholarship and research, the psychological factors that influence, and are influenced by, participation in sport, exercise, and physical activity.

  • To advance and communicate knowledge about the psychological aspects of exercise, health and sport through teaching, research and community interaction at local, national, and international levels.

Staff in exercise, health & sport psychology study the socio-cultural and psycho-social factors associated with involvement in human movement activities. These factors include: broad social systems and cultural values that surround participation in sport and exercise; small-group process such as team/group dynamics and coach/athlete interaction; and individual psychological processes such as participation motives, achievement goals, and reactions to success and failure. Specific areas of teaching and research interest for staff in exercise, health & sport psychology include: performance enhancement interventions; career transitions; coping processes; over-training, staleness, and burn-out; injury rehabilitation; psychological processes associated with exercise adoption; and psychological consequences of exercise.
